My Guide to Mental Health and Well-being (Part 1)

Reading Time: 4 minutes

Hey everyone,

Matt here reporting to you from my humble abode, with another piece this time relating to mental health and wellness. We all know someone or have had experiences of our own with mental exhaustion and stress. At times like these, with the whole world seemingly in a Coronavirus pandemic scare we need to look after our well-being even more so. It is so easy for someone to get down/frustrated when things are going wrong and then stay there. Many people today are not mentally strong and have personal issues which prevent them from continuing to push on through in times of hardship. Therefore, because of this lots of people suffer from mental illness, depression, psychosis and other related disorders. In a lot of ways, mental sicknesses and sadness in general is like the fight with this coronavirus because both can be invisible enemies. You may see someone in your daily life who appears fine. However, at the end of the day they may be fighting a constant battle with themselves that others around are completely oblivious to. Hence, why I always say to try and be nice and understand people regardless of how they may come off, because you just do not know what they may be going through. Everyone has their own ways of dealing with things and for a lot of us this includes ignoring the issues that are present, which is never the way to go.

Nobody said life was going to be easy, however; there are ways we can make it better for ourselves. Humans need love, support, motivation, inspiration, togetherness, and unity from family and or friends to get through tough times. We are at our lowest point when we are alone and have nobody there to guide us or lean on. When we need help there are always ways in which we can get what is required. There is no need for anyone to suffer in silence when there are people who care about us in life and they are by our side. I am lucky enough not to suffer from any mental illnesses that keep me down as well as have a loving family, however; I know people that do, and it is not fun to witness either. Having said that, there are times when I need to speak to people as well about things I deal with. Naturally, what helps me is I have always been an optimistic, glass half full positive vibe type of guy. Having this kind of outlook on life is so valuable when it comes to mental fortitude and stability. Without this sort of view, every little thing that goes wrong in life would turn into a huge negative, which it does not need to be. Having a positive mindset about things in life allows you to recover quicker when things go wrong. It also helps you realize that even when things do go wrong it is just life trying to teach you another lesson to take forward into the next phase of your existence. I am not saying that you got to be happy about everything that happens in life, but there is no need to get too down about things either. If anything, an approach where you stay levelheaded, balanced, not too high or too low is the best to take.

Personally, I have found that taking time to decompress is especially important to our mental health. With so much going on in the world today and on social media it can be overwhelming at times. Shutting off all electronics and taking time to meditate, exercise, read, take a nap, watch a movie/show, play a game, and spend time with family is crucial. We must do this daily to ensure that our mind and body takes a step back from always being in the loop, which is not always a good thing. Taking a hot shower or bath can be relaxing and soothes the mind and body. Below, I will discuss ways you can maintain your mental health and sanity through the ups and downs of life. Being happy and keeping up our spirits is not as hard to achieve as some people think it is. You must put your mind to it and be determined to succeed, telling yourself nothing can and will bring you down. Remember it is all a mindset and it can be dealt with, defeated, and treated, just like any other thing in life that is correctable, and we identify as “bad”.
